drilling into 1600 engine block

want to do conversion without a adaptor kit cos I'm cheap and rangi, have read a few places about drilling into the engine block to bolt up the gear box o the lower bolts. has anyone on here done this? how far do you drill before you hit vitals? and how did you drill it straight? bit hard to tap a crooked hole!!

I've done that before. I drilled the top holes out to fit the larger vitara bolts.
They put the clutch in, mounted the gearbox with clutch inside, did everything up.
Then drilled straight through the engine block, and ground down the other side flat enough to get a nut onto.
The bit you are drilling through should just be engine casing where it comes out to bolt to the vitara gearbox.

Thats primo to know its just a nut and bolt! Makes it heaps easier. Have you got any rangi ways of doing the engine mount also. Ive seen it just drilled futher across and then missing the "c" shape piece of metal but that would make the engine lower?

I just drilled further back and removed the spreader as in the guide here

I drilled the bell house lining up with the engine. Well not me personally the mate who helped me fit it

for the sake of £45 for an adapter plate or welding some bolts together what's the point in drilling through the block bodging it and potentially ruining a good engine.

I have had to change the gearbox on one done like that. It was a pain in the ass and I wouldn't trust it, the section of the block that needs to be drilled is at risk of breaking if ground down after it's drilled to nut down bolt it.

The thing is here in nz the adaptor kit is about 250$ so quite a bit of coin. Im still tossing up wether i weld bolts together. Just want to know wht others thought on drilling

I ran mine for 5 years drilled with no issues really. That sticking out lug is quite thick
But I did find this the other day if you want to get one cut out...
