SJ413 Oil Light - No pressure

Post by aburts » Tue Mar 28, 2017 2:03 pm

Please bare with me, I'm not the tech-iest but learning as I go...

Had the oil warning light come on at the back end of last week, checked the oil, its fine. Hooked it up to a gauge and it was giving off a low reading (around 10-12). I had a new filter in a few months back and a full oil change so don't think its as simple as that. (although I had heard someone say there are a few different filter types you can get for them?)

What should the gauge be reading? And what's next? Change the pump? Last thing I want is a full engine change as I've already ploughed load of money in it over the last few months and being a novice mechanic it would mean getting some paid worker to do it.

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm itching to get out for an adventure in it now.

Thanks.

You should have 42-60psi at 3000rpm. 10-12psi does sound low for idle.

Change the filter to try that anyway, worth it for the sake of a few £.

If it's not that then unfortunately you are going to need to start tearing the engine down to investigate.

Mine sits at around 14psi at idle when warmed up. 40psi when idling cold.
Rev up to 3000rpm warm will hit around 50psi, cold about 60psi.
The low pressure comes on at around 2.5psi, pretty sure I could use the power of thought to pressure the oil more than that...

Maybe worth while before stripping the engine down too throw a tin of STP oil additive in,that not only adds additional protection but also slightly thickens the oil up so should also give you a small increase in oil pressure, its only about £6 a tin and alot less expense and hassle of stripping a engine down.

New filter and a tin of STP could sort the problem out.

Out of interest, how did you test the pressure? I only ask as my oil light kept coming on, and then stopped totally, turned out to be dud oil pressure switch

I was looking at all the additives whilst in euro's recently, do you rate the stuff? There was also a cleaning additive to add to the fuel.

Have been thinking about trying them might pick up some today if itll do good for the engine.

Is the oil additive left in the engine or does it need to be flushed out after so many miles?

I have used it in about everything that has a internal combustion engine for over 20+ years, when you check and need to top up the oil i just add a tin of STP or Wynns oil additive and 'it stays' in the engine all the time,it just thickens the viscosity of the oil and help reduce friction and makes the engine run smoother, also it makes the oil stick more too the internal components as well, this means that when you stop the engine and then start it up say next day or so you dont stand the chance of starting up the engine totally dry till the oil pump starts circulating the oil.

As it improves the viscosity it should in theory improve the oil pressure a little,i used it in my Isuzu Trooper disel and it done 200,000 miles and was still running as smooth a watch but the body rot finally got it,even in my lawn mower which is a oil fling oil system basically its a 4 stroke but does not have a oil pump it relies on a splash feed from being picked up by the con rod and slung around the engine,it works a treat in basically all engines.

The STP or Wynns petrol or diesel additive do work as well, mainly used it in diesel engine or petrol engines that have injectors, you can use it in normal aspirated petrol engines as well, but they do 2 types one for diesels and the other for petrol engines.

Before you buy the oil additive or petrol additives, check and double check that its the right version for your car,of course it will state on the labels for 'petrol' or 'diesel' engines, but for the price it has to be worth a try try rather than stripping the engine down.

Thanks rich,

I'm going to give it a try! There are two stp petrol additives i saw, one was for injectors and one was for cleaning fuel lines and something or other (can't remember exactly.
