A little help with a 1.6 vit engine swap?

Post by aburts » Wed Apr 26, 2017 5:25 pm

Hello,

I've purchased a 1.6 vitara engine plus the conversion plates in one auction from ebay, from someone planning to do the same, for my SJ413 and looking for some help with a couple of points I could find answers for on the 'how-to's.

I've taken my Sj to a local garage as I'm not the most techy and they've taken it as far as they can with what little knowledge of SJ's they have.

So here's where I need help, the first issue is with the starter motor, a friend of the mechanic said there is a slim-line starter available for the 1.6 engine, anyone know where I might get one?

Secondly, the bonnet wont close now, the mechanic said he things this is because of the engine mounts, any clues as to what I need to drop it down?

Thanks.

Adam.

The starter, I couldn't get one when I put a 1.6 in mine, so I ground some of the block down, there is a raised pattern on the side which I removeded, and then a little off the starter. The plenum chamber stops the bonnet from closing, could always cut a hole and putting a scoop on, I did but never liked it

How did you do the mounts?

You can mod the Sj carb plenum to fit the vit carb, it needs a spacer welding on to lift it up so it doesn't foul the choke mechanism on the vit carb.

What he said, but even with the SJ plenum mine still hit

I've managed to fit the stock vit airbox under a 410 bonnet before....should be easy with a 413/samurai bonnet ;)

I think with mine the mount was welded too high on the chassis, was ok with the first engine but the next one sat higher. Could the mounts have the holes elongated on the engine side?

Some details of how I mount them.

Driver side
50x25mm adapter made out of box section, sj engine mount with vitara engine mount bracket.

Passenger side
All SJ mounts with 2 spacers (only one fitted in this pic)

Ok, so I may have worded it incorrectly, he says the engine mounts to chassis dont fit.

in a 413 the passenger side will line up, drivers side won't. You will have to fabricate one for there. Have a look at Scotties pics, can you knoc one up? Or can you get the garage to do it?

Hey Scottie, do you keep the vitara alternator? Does it connect straight to the su loom?
