Removal of 1985 SJ413 front & rear bumper (and front grill)

Post by alanl » Sun May 01, 2011 6:39 pm

I need to remove the front bumper on my 1985 SJ413 (soft top) to patch it up and respray (see photo)- my son drove it into a ditch in France. It appears that that are only four bolts holding it on - is that correct? Are there any hints/tips, things that I should be aware of when removing it? I also want to remove and respray the rear bumper - is that straight forward ? And finally I also want to remove the front grill - is it correct that only five screws hold it in place? Sorry, if these are basic questions, but I've only ever done simple maintenance in the past. Thanks for any guidance.

If all this goes ok, my next questions will be on how to remove the rear plastic wheel arches.

Funnily enough, I had mine off today, and it's the same as yours, and I have a hole in the same place on the oteher side, it's common for the bumpers to rust and go soft there, as dirt collects on the inside.

Yes, it's just four bolts, two in front of each wheel.

If you want to remove it from the vehicle, first remove the bullbar by unding the bolts holding it onto the brackets, then you want to undo the screws holding the lights in place and remove the cover and possibly the bulbs to be safe.
Once you've unbolted the bumper, it should drop and rest on the bullbar brackets. Careful not to drop it as you might rip the wires out of the lights. Finally poke light units through the bumper.

That's how I did it anyway. See if anyone else suggests otherwise, as I'm a bit of a newbie.

As for the arches, I'd like to know myself actually, 'cause I couldn't work out how to get them off. I've never had the rear one off so I don't know. You'll probably have to fiddle with the number plate light.

There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

The arches are a bit fiddly and the clips feel like there going to bust any second and some may  .
Basically it's like a rawlplug, a plastic plug which the back expands when the peg/pin is inserted. All you need to do is remove the pin then it can be removed from arch. If you can get the pin out without pulling the top off :argh: . Hope my crappy diagram explains better.
The rear bumper bolts if I remember are behind the light units, just some m6 bolts.

I yanked my arch clips out with a flathead screwdriver, pliers and mole grips. Took a bit of persuasion and time but got there in the end, front arches this summer!

Also you will need to take the bullbars off first ;)
