Sterter Motor
Sterter Motor
The engine suddenly wouldn't start last night. Just one click each time, sounds like the starter motor in my limited knowledge!! How can I check, also how many wires run from the starter motor? Type SJ413
Re: Sterter Motor
Hi, u will have large main feed wire from the battery, it earths trhough the mounting bolts but worth checking all clean and tight. there will be a smaller push on terminal, 1/4" blade type. from memory this is brown with red trace, this is the feed from the ignition switch which could well be your problem, they do suffer with voltage drop in the ignition switch contacts. if u run a temp feed from the battery positive to this smaller terimnal or bridge it to the main feed terminal it should crank the engine, make sure its not in gear!!!.
if it still doesn't work and u r sure main feed and earth conections are good then its the starter motor. t
there may be 2 small push on wires the other is the coil feed for cold starting but it doesn't matter if u feed this by mistake u can't do any damage.
hope this helps
cheers Kev

Re: Sterter Motor
hi, if its been through plenty of water could be brushes stuck. take the starter off and undo the bolts that run through the motor and ease off the rear of the motor case. should be able 2 c 4 brushes inside check they all move in the holder and still long enough to reach the armature,

Re: Sterter Motor
Thanks for all the help guys. Now does anyone have a diagram of the Starter motor so I can see how it's fitted or is it that simple to take out?
Re: Sterter Motor
pop the bonnet, stand infront of the truck looking into the engine bay.
on the left hand side you will see the battery.
Follow the big thick +ve lead to the starter motor.
then take cable off terminal, and off the starter, take the small wire off starter too. then there are 2X 12mm bolts one on the top, one on the bottom. take them out, and the starter is of. you may need to apply a bit of force to break the seal onto the bell housing.
