It's a normally aspirated 2.8 diesel in a Fourtrack are far as I know, hence the lack of power. Still a ton or torque though I'd expect from that capacity. The Sporttrack has a 1.8 petrol I think, so that'll have a bit more poke than an SJ.
Never driven one, so I don't know what they're like though I've been considering buying a Fourtrack when I finish Uni so that my SJ can go in the garage and be steadily restored.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Nope it's a 2.8td Ed
The 93 fourtrak 2.8tdx has 101bhp and 181lbs ft in standard form, i dont think the fuel consumption is that great either but you can run them on veggie oil. You can turn the pump up and they do go well, parrot ran 37" tyres on standard gearing and it would still motor along quite well.
However depending what VW tdi you go for some of them damn good Bhp and torque figures for a 1.9 tdi
The mk3 AHU has around 89bhp and 150lbs/ft and the AFN has 108bhp and 170lbs/ft
If you went for a mk4 golf 1.9tdi lump there's some pretty powerful ones a avaible in standard form some of which are more powerful than the daihatsu lump
There's also a lot of tuning options for the vw tdi engines.

Pretty much most of what you have said i dont know about.
But a vw engine is what i would be looking to get.

Okay, I was wrong about the Fourtrak. I've never heard it called a 2.8td before so I just guessed it wasn't. In that case though surely it wouldn't take a lot to get more power out of it then? That said, if you're not getting the most you can out of an engine it'll probably last longer.

on mine i upped the boost, added as much fuel as i could without going inside the pump,3" exhaust and it got driven hard every day,the last trip i done in it back from work before i done these vids i drove 7 miles flat out in 2nd to try and kill it

the fourtrak is such a under stressed engine it can cope with abuse easy as long as the cooling system is in good working order
i mean if i cant kill one they must be strong
