410 smoking after oil change?

Post by Sj410red » Wed Feb 12, 2014 11:34 pm

After an oil change using the correct 10/40 oil she smokes upon start up, valve stem seals I hear you all say, so my question is how easy are they done on the 410 without removing the head?

I presume you used semi-synthetic?

this often happens on old engines that have always been filled with mineral oil all their life.

It is possible to do the valve stem oil seals without removing the head but it can be awkward when refitting the collets as they are a non interference engine so you can't cheat and use the piston to hold the valves up.

I've noticed mine smokes a lot on start up and I use semi-synthetic, I haven't used engine flush either...

I've got the whole engine gasket set to do on my 410..

I only wondered if you had as with a lot of old engines general oil gunk can plug the tiny holes/gaps/cracks etc and using engine flush cleans all them out and can show you oil leaks that were previously sealed, which might have been one reason for the smoking, but you didnt which is good.

Same thing can happen switching to semi-synthetic in an engine that has always used mineral oil.
