Right, I've decided to try to become a diff expert. I have 6 spare diffs (iirc I have 4 3.9's, 2 3.7's and the 2 3.7's in the SJ), so I've decided that one or two of those diffs can be sacrificed to my educational experience if needs be. Hopefully I won't kill them, but if I do - no great loss.

So I've bought a dial indicator, a dial indicator type inch-pounds torque wrench, some white grease (because I couldn't find gear marking compound anywhere) and a few other bits and pieces.

If I can work out the finer points of rebuilding a zuk diff, then I can always share that with you guys. Anyone who wants to help me become competent is more than welcome to throw me some pointers now and then. I'll probably be bothering 4x4Steve on hpoc.co.uk too, because I hear he's a bit of a diffs don amongst the hilux boys.

Also I'm now insured with Adrian Flux, who didn't quote me £1200 this year - just over 300 this time. Although I told them my SJ was worthless last year (which was true) whilst this year I told them it was worth £2,500 because I was told that insurance on vehicles worth only a few hundred goes up. Because they assume that you'll drive your crappy worthless car like you stole it.

Which I do. Not. Do not. Definitely do not, constable.

Anyhow, thinking it's worth a few bob, they gave me a decent quote this year! And they're ok with me fitting my bucket seats. The last lot (insure2drive) wanted an extra £300 if I modded the thing any further (roll cage, bucket seats, whatever - they didn't care, it was £300 - and another grand for the next mod, after that they wouldn't insure me anymore).

So I'll see what I can do about getting these seats I bought off Mike a year or so ago actually fitted soon, health permitting! Maybe after that I'll sort out getting the chromoly front shafts in and the lockers and the rocklobster and the x-eng x-brake and the winch fitted and I think that's the lot. Aaaaand breathe.

good stuff though, hope your health will let you do some of the stuff you want, and enable you to get out in it to enjoy it!

I'm not sure what I like most, building it, or driving it!

Mudding is fun, but so is modding!

Love both. There is no end to what you can do to modify a Suzuki. My LJ is never going to be finished...

Adrian Flux for P6 with agreed value of £4500 all mods fully comp £108. Bargain. Though they are a bunch of wankers, maybe 15 emails in 4 days all contradicting themselves, finally got it all sorted.

Adrian flux told me that keeping my SJ on the street in London is the reason why it cost me so much to insure, otherwise it'd be a lot cheaper - although £108!!! Blimey!

Sorted out my left brake light. Stupid landrover parts - the bulb keeps slipping out of the holder, which is basically just too big for the bulbs it's designed to take.

So I bought some cheap brass bulb holders, reamed out the plastic LR one, pushed the brass bulb holder into the plastic bulb holder, crimped on some connectors and bob's my uncle. Actually, I *do* have an uncle Robert...

Lives in Norwich...

Moral of the story: Cheap ebay tat is better than LandRover parts. Which you should never, ever put on an SJ.

And the insurance is cheap as it's for a classic car. No idea why that means dirt cheap insurance but there you go. I could have insured an MGB, for example, for £53.

And I am an old git lol.

One of my wheels has a slow leak around the stem. Last time I had it off, I found that the hole that the valve stem goes through didn't look (or feel) quite round.

Not sure how that happens, but hey ho - sanded it and managed to get the valve stem to seal. Except that now it's leaking again.

So my good fellows, I'd like a bit of advice - should I pull the tyre off, weld up the hole, grind it back and then redrill it? Is that a good idea? Or am I unlikely to get a good seal if my grinding isn't perfect to within a micron?

My mate with the Hilux, Scottie, seems to think welding up the hole is a bad idea. Thoughts?

I'm sure that's what rhino ray does when he makes off set rims, weld the old valve hole and drill the other side. Don't know if a good thing or not, never thought about it

I know the feeling, I think that is what they all do when making off set, that was the only name I could think of
