As far as i can see there is no thin plate on there anymore ! yes i think its known as the skinny starter ! and i think there is clearance between the starter body and the block !
This is a 1600 vitara engine and as far as i know its an SJ starter motor .. ? are these the same ? Thanks again !

This is a bit odd as the adapter plate should make up for the lack of the spacer plate.

1.3 Sj and vit starters are the same fitement however you can only use skinny starters with the 1.6 engine and 1.3 gearbox combo without mods.

I haven't seen this happen before but a temporary option could be to make a spacer for the starter?

You see the little metal ring around the end of the starter shaft? The gear stops against that so check that its not moving about... just a thought...

Have you got a photo of the adaptor plate?

Does it cover the complete front of the gearbox or just the area where it mates to the engine?

Proper adaptor plates do not affect flywheel / starter spacing.

hmmmm looking at that starter motor. it looks like a regular skinny starter...
except the nose cone sticks out too far...

It could possibly be a starter of the same type but not the correct one?

Ive got a (broken) skinny starter of that type so later on I will photograph how far it should stick out...

Also that is a rather chunky adapter plate... its thicker that mine from the looks of it!
Looks about twice as thick as the standard plate that goes in there!

I would have expected that the starter gear didn't go far enough but that's not the case!

I've got one of those adapter plates sat on the shelf in the workshop and it's no thicker than any of the others on the market.

I know, I just said it was thicker than mine!

If anything, it should be helping!

I think Twiss may well be correct.
Here's a pic from Difflock showing a skinny and standard starter.
The drive gear on yours doesn't retract into the body like the others.
But your adaptor plate still looks dam thick to me :er: and a standard starter may well not mesh fully.

The adaptor does not affect the starter / flywheel spacing. It just moves the gearbox back a few mm.

The starter still sits flush with the back of the engine as if mounted direct to the gear box.
