Re: lock right diff
Price difference even if they did fit 410's would sway me to give the lock right a try. Is it worth putting one front and rear tho??

You can get cheap Chinese Air lockers that have been proving to work well and be reliable. Chris your question actually reminded me, there's a guy on lj10.com who made a hybrid jimny air locker with the 26spline side gears out of a sammy airlocker and a few other things. Have a read here. http://www.lj10.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... &hilit=arb

Re: lock right diff
I have one Samurai with front and rear welded diffs and one with rear only welded.
it makes a HUGE difference offroad but these are offroaders only, i wouldn't do it in something you use on the road regularly.
the one with the front diff welded has manual hubs, so i can unlock them when travelling around a site then lock them when needed (it makes the steering tight when hubs are locked)
another way round using a welded rear diff on the road is to fit a dummy halfshaft.
One thats cut off short (just past the wheel bearing) so that it doesn't reach the diff.
Only really any good if you have rear discs or the backplate centre cut out wider so the shaft can be easily and quickly removed and swapped for a real one once you're at your offroad site.
just remove the wheel and the four bolts to remove it
Again you need to watch it on the road with only one rear driving wheel, especially in the wet buts its loads better than driving with a welded diff

Re: lock right diff
Are they significantly cheaper than an ARB? I know KAM difflocks go for about £550 (inc uprated halfshafts) but for the rear only.ScottieJ wrote:You can get cheap Chinese Air lockers that have been proving to work well and be reliable. Which makes me wonder what the best option would be - KAM or Chinalocker... I think I'd go for the KAM if the prices were similar, if only because getting spares/dealing with warrantee issues would be far easier with KAM being based in England.
Having said that, for the £550 of the KAM you can get front and rear lock right's from jimnybits, so if it's cheap you want...

Re: lock right diff
I wouldn't bother with Kams personally. do a bit of research and you'll see they can have quite a few issues as well as the fact you need to chop up the axle casing to fit them.
chinasoong air lockers are about £800 for both including the compressor shipped I think.

Re: lock right diff
I'm not currently planning on fitting either, but I have heard that KAM had reliability issues when they first started making difflocks, but from what I've been told, they've sorted them out.
Still, £800 is hard to argue with. I just worry that they might fall apart and lock up an axle at some really inconvenient time - like on a motorway...

Mixed opinions on these, I guess it could be down to the setup of them with regard to backlash etc as to how and when they lock up?

Re: lock right diff
Just my personal opinion. I think if it was a off road toy only, I'd probably give them a go. But if I was to use on the road as well I'd go for one of the others kam/arb, probably kam due to price. Don't think I'd like not have control over them on the road.

Re: lock right diff
I've driven a welded diff on the road and to be honest, apart from tight turning at slow speeds where the tyre squeaks you wouldn't notice it.
Yes if you boot it hard on a corner or in the wet/ice it will slide but if you drive it normally they are fine.
I've never driven one with a locker on the road but the idea of the lockrite coming on and off whenever it pleases doesn't sound good
