Timing was way out. Probably why I had so much trouble getting it through the MOT. Now it's at 10 degrees from TDC at 800rpm. Hits about 22-24 degrees by 5000rpm, so I'd say the vac advance is working properly.
If I'd had a working timing light (damn you accuspark!) I'd have sorted that before the MOT. Anyhow, borrowed one and now the timing is set right - next up, I'm going to try the colourtune thing again, and see if I can set the mixture correctly. At which point, this engine should be running as optimally as it can be set up to.
The gastester was a complete failure. It was reading 2.6 when I took it for the MOT, but when I put it through, the MOT man's machine said 4.9 (or somewhere thereabouts). Thankfully a little twiddle of the carb and it ran properly.
I've noticed I can get it to idle as low as I like when it's cold, but when it warms up, it idles at about 1000-1200. In fact, as I have it set, it wants to idle at about 400, so it goes to stall - warm it up a touch and the idle speed climbs.
I think the AED (auto enrichment device) is not working properly. That's ok, I'll just add a choke cable. I'd be nice to have an AED, but I'm not going to fuss over it now.

I don't know if you can see this (or if my eyes were messing with me when I was doing this) but the mix runs blue with little bits of yellow when I rev it and hold the revs steady (which I wasn't doing very well in the vid). Going yellow (rich) when accelerating, blue on the over-run, and blue with a hint of yellow when holding revs steady.
This is what the colourtune manual said to look for. Have I done it right? What do you guys think?
