Your giving me hope Scottie :) .. Tomorrow its going to a mechanic for a carb rebuild and while its there I'll get him to put it on the lift and we can have a better look. Then I'll fix whatever he finds wrong. I'll tell him all the things mentioned in this thread.

I should get it back the same day. Then I'll update this thread :)

Well I went under it today while my dad steered it to make the noise and it is indeed the springs!! So happy with that. I will lube them up when I get the car back from the mechanic. What a result lol.

How can they be made quiet? I was thinking about taking the weight off them then try and separate them by a mm or 2 and using a long paint brush paint in some used engine oil . or if I can separate them enough put a chopped up inner tube as a rubber bush. What do you think?

Cheers

Im going to try some makeshift ways to make them shut up... In the meantime, i got it back from the mechanic, he said the timing and points/condenser was well out, not even sure how it was running,.. He sorted that out and tuned up the carb which he said is in great condition, and now there is no hesitation at all and it pulls on 30" tires as good as it did on 27" tires! wooohooooo .. Im actually genuinely enjoying it for the first time since i bought it, and im getting the urge to keep going out for a little drive lol.

Awesome! Glad to hear it's all running good now!

As for the springs. What some people do is get some 2" wide strips of thin 1-2.5mm ptfe sheet and then strip the packs down putting the ptfe strips in between each leaf, this reduces the friction between the leaves allowing them to slide over each other easier. Should add a tiny bit more comfort as well.

I wanted to do that, Scottie. For the moment I'm just using a squirt of WD40 every now and then.

Stops them sqeaking and makes the ride softer too. Now it's a bit more civilised, and a lot less like being punched in the arse by Evander Holyfield every time I go over a speedbump.

I got silicone spray. I will try and get that in between them for now. Then I'll get that sheet as you mentioned. I read on another forum that u can chop up and inner tube and put buts if it between the leafs as well.

What's the purpose of using an innertube?

I know some people put grease between the leaves, then wrap the leaf packs in leather to keep dirt and stones out (which turn the grease into a grinding paste) - you could use an innertube instead of the leather.

Otherwise, I can't see the point - or am I being thick?
