Let's try and work out how much this would cost.
According to Google maps, for me, it would a round trip of around 3800 miles. At around 35mpg that would be 110 gallons of fuel which is 500 litres, assuming petrol is around £1.10 at that time (could be cheaper abroad) then that would be £550 worth of fuel, at 25mpg it would be £760. Then there is the cost of ferries and accommodation.

You will not need to worry about Altitude sickness, I have ridden a mountain bike at 4100metres, and I survived that, but you will be sat down here and not even notice.
The engine will feel the altitude more than what we will.

This is what made me start thinking about a diesel conversion last year.

I don't know if there are any great options but I think that a better, more efficient petrol engine is a good idea for everyone involved. Ladaman's M15a conversion should be close to 35mpg.

If it costs £250 or less, it'll have paid for itself by the end of the trip (the offroad sections will increase the bill a bit) . I still dream of a Toyota 1.4 D4-d, but I don't think it is feasible, not in the time frames we're thinking of.

As for accommodation, I'd say hostels and/or tents the whole way.

Anton Anton Anton....diesel is the fuel from Satan's backside. It stinks. It's more expensive. It leaks from lorries and has caused me many a crash on a bike. It pollutes like nothing else, and the engines are FUCKING heavy. Stick a vit lump in it.

Oh...and if you need to make a campfire in an emergency you can't.

I'm tenting it and sod the fuel costs. And I want to do the Alpine thingy.
If it ticks over...leave it

Anton, I've absolutely no idea what it does to the gallon. I don't use it as much as I ought to for going to work in, and with the :argh: breakdowns I've had this year, it makes it difficult to guess. My journey to work isn't the best though as I only get 21mpg in my daily.

I brim it each time I set off, have a bit of fun, break it, come home with the AA, mend it, brim it, etc......

I should get the RS full float on over Christmas, so hopefully the break it, come home with the AA, mend it will become a thing of the past, fingers crossed.

Then I will monitor it for you ;)

By the sounds of it, you hate derv as much as Dan does!

As for sleeping arrangements, I say why the hell not have an in-tents holiday? ;)

I don't mind the route as long as it's not boring and as long as we spend as much time away from asphalt as possible. Offroading through the alps just ticks so many boxes!
