MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
Hi all,
I did a search but didn't find anything of use, if you can then please do re-direct me to the relevant post.
But my question is this.. When turning RIGHT its a little bit harder to turn the wheel than when steering LEFT... The car doesn't really pull to the left and it sits level, tire pressures are equal etc.. Is this simply a trait of this car or is something needing adjusting/replacing?
Thanks
Courior

Re: MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
Could be the steering damper, thus the first thing I would check, take it off and test it without.
Re: MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
It has a Steering damper?? lol this thing suprises me every 10 mins.. I though s/d's were the territory of high end expensive machines. (but this is my first 4x4).. Ill try this out tomorrow, failing this though, what else should i look at while i have the spanners out?

Re: MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
My money's on the damper, it's easy to take off just look under the front bumper it connects to the pitman arm and a lug on the chassis, it's dead easy to remove, when you get the damper out you should be able to pull it open and push it closed by hand, my old damper gave up the ghost many moons ago and second hand replacements were just as bad, so I opted for an aftermarket pro comp kit which was much better and helped cure the death wobble, llama4x4 do a similar kit http://www.llama4x4.co.uk (under Suzuki).
Re: MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
So i guess driving without a damper is not a good idea?? Death Wobble doesnt sound pretty.. Ill take it off over the weekend and report back. Cheers for the quick help lads!

Re: MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
I imagine you would cope if your not going too fast, death wobble is when you get an excessive shaking from the wheel about 40mph, to be honest it seems quite common sand is generally related to unbalanced wheels, king pin/wheel bearings or your damper, I'm sure if you take your damper off you will see,
Re: MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
Wheels and tires are new and fully balanced and i don't get any sort of shaking from the wheels at any speed. just when doing some parking or in town i feel the steering is harder to turn right than left...
Lets hope the damper is the problem. There are garages here that stock all sorts of aftermarket things, 4x4 in Malta is a big scene here so there is plenty of places to go for parts.
Cheers

Re: MG410 Steering Easy to Left, Hard to Right
If the front axle and suspension is all in good condition then it should drive fine without a steering damper. Wouldn't really recomended driving it daily without one if you don't have power steering though.

That was going to be my next suggestion if the steering damper was okRhinoman wrote:Could be a CV on its way out.
Do you get any clicks and clunks in 4wd at full steering lock?
