Thumping noise from drum brakes!

I have recently had a 'thumping' noise from the drum brakes when braking at slower speeds, I also feel it through the brake pedal and also I slight jerking of the sj. I cannot feel any of this at higher speeds nor when braking hard. Also the brake warning light has recently come on.

Is it possible one of the drums is bent out of shape? Or do I need new shoes? I know very little about drum brakes.

I have ordered new brake shoes just in case.

Just a case of strip them down and see what's inside.

On SJs the only reason the brake light come on, to the best of my mnowledge, is for low brake fluid too.

Possible knackered slave cylinder?

Could be one of the shoes have come apart, had it happen on a pug. But I would pull the drum for sure, last thing you want is for them not to work

Mud inside, or as Robbie said, they come apart

Recently dismantled mine for the bearings, and half of the shoe had fallen apart!

I fitted new rear shoes just a day before my last MOT, what a nightmare on the near side due to the previous owner fitting an incorrect size brake cylinder.
Worked OK with half worn shoes, but with new ones, struggled for hours but couldn't get the drum back on.

Had to order a new correct Blueprint cylinder, which whilst only 2mm shorter made all the difference getting the drum back on.

Small tip:

If buying new cylinders, both sides are the same L and R, but only one side uses both nipples for brake pipe.

Plus, all the manuals advice to fit new springs when changing shoes, the best and cheapest place (and from India again) is eBay for about £7 a side inc shipping.

Thanks guys, going to take the drums apart either tonight or tomorrow and have a look! I have taken them apart before for a clean and nothing seemed out of place then.

I have a 100 mile trip on Saturday towing a boat so hope everythinks OK in there!

If buying new cylinders, both sides are the same L and R, but only one side uses both nipples for brake pipe.

This isn't true for all models! There's been a number of different set ups over the years using various different cylinders and brake line set ups.

Thing is with SJs you can't always say for sure, parts get changed over the years and suzuki have a habit for randomly changing the parts used as well. over the years there's been numerous times that i've ordered 'the correct part' and it was wrong

Think this is true with a lot of manufactures, Peugeot do it all the time
