surely for a vehicle such as an SJ there will be no records of how loud it was from the factory so how can they enforce this apart from having a standard sj to compare it to at the test station. my sj is no louder than a standard one when driving around town and at idle but as soon as i open her up she gets pretty loud! mine has a cherry bomb backbox and a golf gti silencer; it's 2" from the downpipes back.
Also they didn't make a 1.6 sj in the factory so there isn't a factory vehicle to compare it too, well there apart from a vit but we wont tell them that

Spoke to my MOT man the other day when i booked it and he said noise must be reasonable. All i have on it at the moment is the down pipe and the little silencer. Im hoping he'll pass it so i can tax it and then drive it to the exhaust place to hav an aftermarket jobbie done.
I think you've been done over. Given the amount of boy 'racers' in my area with cherry bombs and the like. Although i think my MOT man is quite generous as he did admit turning a deaf ear within reason.
Its a shame really. Cos the standard exhaust are a nuisance imho, far too low and knock about sommit chronic off road Fingers crossed i'll get my s/s stack done.

3000rpm I think....How do you tell with an SJ?
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

ive got a cheery backbox and now because the front box is blowing in about 4 places i got a cherry to replace it, sounds well nice, but now im startin to worry cos it is MOT time again

Sid James gone but never forgotten
Jimny 1.6 not as good as an SJ but still good

Ha it depends what SJ you have! Some lucky sj owners have rev counters, I would imagine yours will have the LJ type dash with none, Unlucky, but In fairness rev gauges are overrated, In an sj you can hear all the engine noise so you know if you are thrape-ing it

also during an MOT emissions test the vehicle is hooked up to a sensor to read the rpm.
