Helpppppp :( I'm new
Hi guys ! Right ... I've just bought a Suzuki sj for off road.... It Will not start, and when it does it just dies down, as tho there is no petrol getting to the engine.... I looked at the filter and it's blocked with lots of rust particles.... I've cleaned it many times and turned the pump on but it keeps getting clogged... Should I drain the tank and clean it all? Could this be why the car won't run properly ?. Thanks a lot !

yes it would be best to drop the tank and give it a good clean out.
I would also fit a new filter and clean the jets in the carb.
what model SJ is it and what engine is in it (970cc/1300cc/1600cc)and is it running the standard carb?

Re: Helpppppp :( I'm new
I had the exact same problem when I first got my SJ.
Here's a list of everything I did to my SJ to get it running right.
Drain the tank using the drain plug bolt in the bottom of the tank. (If you want to reuse the fuel, filter it through a rag or something, though after all the work I didn't want to put bad fuel back in so I used it in my lawnmower.)
Drop the tank and take out your fuel sender (the pipe that goes into the tank and sucks fuel up.) It should have a gauze filter on the end. Yours, like mine, probably doesn't, because big lumps of crap are blocking the lines and filling up the fuel filter. If the gauze is missing, you need a replacement fuel sender. A short term solution if you need to use the truck whilst you find a sender is to blow it clear. If you're driving along and your truck stops, all you need to do is take off the fuel cap, take the hose off the petrol tank side of the fuel filter, blow until you hear bubbles, put it all back together and you should be off again.)
Replace the fuel filter with a new one.
I fitted a little inline cartridge filter between the pump and the carburettor, so that it would stop any crap that had gotten past the sender and the filter from getting to the carb (One like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SMALL-IN-LINE ... 826wt_1133 I got mine for £1 from a Land Rover/4x4 auto jumble.)
Take your carburettor apart (carefully, I would personally recommend doing this somewhere clean and well lit over something that will catch pieces but not everyone will get away taking their carb to bits in their bedroom over a baking tray) and give it a good clean with carb-cleaner and/or petrol. If you can, you might want to try blasting the jets with compressed air. I'd get a carb-service kit ready for doing this, so you can put it back together with new gaskets and such. There is probably a guide somewhere and I'm sure one of the mods has a link they can paste for a guide to assembling your carb. I would also recommend a Haynes manual if you don't already have one as this has useful information about setting the carb up properly.
I did also replace the fuel lines between the filter at the back and pump as well as take the fuel pump off and pumped it by hand with clean fuel through it until the stuff that came out again was clean as well. Probably overkill but as I was trying to clean the system out I thought I might as well.

There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.
