Newbie with SJ problems :)

Hi there ,, I'm new to all this so was hoping for some info on some bits to do with an SJ 413 that I've just bought if possible ??
It has a 1600 vitara engine fitted with like a gold coloured adaptor plate between the gear box and the engine , I bought it as a none runner as the stater motor was not fitted as there was a problem with it !? I've tested the starter and it seems to be fine but I can see where it's been hitting the flywheel past the ring gear teeth ?? And when it does crank over it cranks very slow as if its binding ?? It's a H reg so I think 90/91 year I belive the starter if from the original sj engine !?
If anyone has any ideas or info on what I need to do to solve this problem it would be greatfully received ?! Thanks in advance , Luke !!

First off welcome to the forum!
Do you have a pic of the starter motor you could post here? There are a few different types to it may help to know which one you have
1.6 conversion starters can be a pain at the best of times! (personal experience)

Once you have a pic on your PC, underneath where you write the post is the "Upload attachment" section... hit the "Choose..." button and find the pic... then when done click on "Add the File"
If you are using the reply box at the bottom of the page you will need to use the full editor... Theres a button for it under the typing area

ive tried spacing it out a little but seemed to make a funny noise once the solenoid had thrown in ?
Is this adaptor plate normal ? is this a set up that is used ?

Its quite normal to use an adapter plate, the quality of them can vary though.

All the adaptor plates I've seen have been thin, so I'm not sure what you have there.
When the starter is bolted up is there still clearance between the starter body and the engine block.
I think that looks like the skinny starter though.
I assume when people do this conversion (using an adaptor plate) they do away with the thin standard plate fitted
A couple more pics of your plate may be helpful (wider shot).
