Kill Switch

Post by turbo-tom » Mon Jan 16, 2012 10:21 pm

putting a kill switch back in my sj , but previously it only went throught the ignition side of things

would i able to wire it up in a form of way so it goes through the battery and kills everything , engine , lights , starter motor etc the lot

this is the type of switch/tir key i have

Yeah, put it between the battery negative terminal and the chassis strap (earth point), use thick wire and by operating it everything electrical will stop

If you want to just isolate the battery then that is one way of doing it

if you want use the switch to kill power (engine running) then you need to get a FIA approved cut off switch with 6 terminals (also a requirement for some MSA events)

If the engine is running and you flip that switch, the car will continue to run, and then your alternator will fail after a while

that switch you have is normally used for isolating things like winches, and will work brilliantly for isolating the battery

if the car is running and you disconect the battery, the engine is still running, the alternator is still sending out voltage only as it does not have a constant feed (ie 14v) it tends to go mad and start generating too much voltage

the FIA switch has 6 terminals, 2 big ones for the battery terminals, and 4 spade terminals

2 are linked when the switch is in the on posistion, these are normally used for the feed to the coil
the other two only join when the switch is in the off position, this is used to drain any remaining voltage left in the system after you disconnect everything

you would think so, but because the engine is still turning, so is the alternator, and there for making electricity

try it, run the engine and take the neg lead off, done this before (dont what ever you do do it for long though)

in thereoy though couldnt i just put it through the battery because , when you normally take a key out of the ignition it kills everything electrical , so if i was to wire it through the battery its just pretty much doing the samething ?
