Re: Best engine conversion
i though all 410's had freewheeling hubs? maybe not.
or maybe it did originally?
If you can pick up a pair of these hubs it will mean you can run it without the front shafts/diff/prop all turning which should reduce the drag and give you a little more power/mpg whilst in 2wd

Re: Best engine conversion
Also maybe worth finding a 5 speed gearbox if it dosent currently have one.
You can do all the kind of mods you would do to a road car but dont expect too much improvement.

Most use Peugeot or Izuzu engines
I've also seen Ford 1.6 1.8 and 2.5 diesels used

Re: Best engine conversion
I think I have to second Scottie on the engine thing - if you want more power, but you don't want a massive work schedule, get the 1.6 suzuki engine and a SJ413 gearbox. More or less a straight swap, and I'm told (by scottie, actually!) there's very little difference in weight between the 1.6 and my 1.3 - and I know how light my 1.3 is, I lifted it into my car without a hoist.
Ok, I *AM* huge, but still - it's a *very* light engine. They shove the Suzi ali blocks into microlight aircraft, for goodness sake!
I've swapped a 1.3 for a 1.3 and it's (relatively) easy. A few hours work. The 1.6 is a teeny bit more work, but only a teeny bit. You'll have to swap gearboxes at the same time, so a couple more hours to add, but it's still not a nightmare. Shoving a V8 or a Diesel in there represents *weeks* of work, and it's a much heavier engine - and pretty much everyone who's shoved a heavier engine in an SJ has said it ruins their awesome offroad abilities.
If I were you, I'd either port & polish your current engine and fit it with bike carbs, and perhaps you'll nearly match the 1.6 for power, or get a 1.6.
(And by that statement, I do mean I'd forget everything else and get the 1.6). Your choice, though.
