A few questions before I do some work
Hi there, planning to do some work on the SJ413 this week such as susp bushings, speedo cable, reverse switch wires, new window channels, new fan belt, etc.
Regarding the fan belt, how do I get the fan out of the way to change the belt (it looks fairly tired!)? Do I need to go at it through the fender and grille?
Would I be able to change the rear leaf bushings using just the jack?
I'm a little stumped still as to what engine I have in my 1985. Its stamped G13B16367, 1298cm3 so I'm thinking it's from a post 1990 SJ or a Swift. I have 5L of 5w-30 fully synthetic mobil from my last car that is going to waste, and am considering whether it would be suited or not to the engine?
Any help is great!

Should just be able to work the fan belt over the fan once you have released it from the alternator.
If by 'the jack' you mean the standard suzuki one in the engine bay then I wouldnt recommend using it to work on the vehicle. It really is for emergency use only.
Dont know about the oil.

I think 5/30 may be a little thin for these engines, I've always used 10/40 myself.
You need to be able to jack under the chassis to swap the spring bush over (number 8). The problem you may have is the bolt being rusted into the bush sleeve. If this is the case normally people cut them off and use a new bolt on assembly. (does the new bush have a sleeve set into the rubber or are you fitting polybushes with a separate sleeve). If it still has the original suzuki bushes these can be difficult to remove, easy enough if you have some large sockets and threaded bar though.

Had a look on Castrol website. Recommend 5w/40 fully synthetic (edge) or 10w/40 part synthetic (magnatec)
Not sure what to say really, lets see what other people run in there's --------
I use "Morris oil" part synthetic 10w/40 just because that's what brand my local motorist shop stocks.Not sure what to say really, lets see what other people run in there's --------

i always stick with comma oils , as thats what my local motor shop stocks and i have never had a problem with them

I work at wilkinsons on a Saturday morning, my sjs run on there 10 40 diesel oil cleans the engine up a treat plus getting a discount on it helps lol. as I go through so much oil, plus I'm pretty sure it's comma oil

5/30 is too thin for an old engine like a Suzuki. I'd put that in a lawnmower of a motorcycle.

Thanks for all the pointers for these jobs ages ago. I finally got around to them last weekend and was delighted to find the belt comes over the fan. As I don't have a lift I brought the SJ round to local mechanic to do the bushings. Naturally he had major problems getting the old ones out but the issue now is that the large eye leaf spring bushings (41331-62020) I got as replacement don't fit. The body diameter is 40mm on these but the eye, with old steel sleeve still installed is a few mm tighter. So I'm faced with having to try and find a slightly smaller bushing or sand a few mm off the new one (which I presume will effect its characteristics). Just wondered had anybody this issue of 40mm bush not fitting?
