Fitting Samurai Axles to SJ
I picked up some Samurai axles the other day to fit to my SJ.
I've started stripping them for a rebuild and also read this thread about moving the perches:

I've got a couple of questions I was hoping someone might be able to help with:
1. I'm looking at moving the perches inwards and I'm figuring the inboard side of the perch is going to require quite a lot of cutting away in order to fit it because the cross section of the axle gets notably wider. Anyone done this and got any pointers (or maybe some pictures?) or do I just get the angle grinder out and get creative!
2. I started stripping the axle and was expecting to find a normal spindle nut. Instead I found the crazy looking nut shown in the picture below. Anyone know where I can get a tool to undo this thing?
3. I was looking at these perches:

They offer the option to be able to reposition the axles forward or backwards slightly, is there any advantage to this?
4. I have a bit of play in the rear diff. If I hold the flange that bolts to the rear prop and shake it about there is some play. I just read this post:

In which Scott mentions that rebuilding the diff may not be a particularly fun job. I've found one on ebay for £25. Has anyone rebuilt a rear diff, and if so would you do it again or would you just cheat and pay £25 for another one?

Thanks Dazerade, that's handy as he actually lives pretty close to me... I wonder if he has the tool needed to undo that spindle nut...

Thats part of the FWH.
Remove the circlip from the end of the shaft and undo the bolts holding it to the hub and it will slide off to reveal what you were expecting to see.

Its not a nut, there is a c-clip on the end, take that off and the hub will slide off the shaft.

I'm going to build up some vit r&p's I've got into some trashed sammy diffs when I lay my hands on the trashed diffs. Until then I cant tell you.

Thanks, well I'm leaning towards just swapping it out for now. The parts I'd need to do the job actually appear to be more expensive than the diff that's on ebay!

I have all the gear to set up diffs would be best to get a set of pinion bearings, a new seal and a new crush collar.
As for the diff side perch, just grind it out until the perch sits flat, I've got a very basic jig that I use to set the perch positions if you want to borrow it?
