starter motor issues
Just picked up my 1.6 engine and he gave me a skinny starter as he said it didn't work, done a bench test and the cog fly's out but doesn't spin round, is this a fixable issue?

Re: starter motor issues
If you put 12v positive on this terminal does the motor spin.
If not then the brushes are worn out or the windings damaged.
If it does then the solenoid is knacked, not the windings as it throws out the gear but the switch built into the rear of the solenoid.
You can get solenoids for some starters as I've just fitted a new one to mine. (fat type- 413)
If it needs a new solenoid post up some pics and any info plates and we can see if we can find one.
These skinny starters are hard to come by nowadays , so we really should try and fix them rather than find another

Re: starter motor issues
Just worked, tried it again and it worked fine, got me dad down to check and it didn't work, he went away and it worked again, think its just a bit intermittent !!

Re: starter motor issues
Also just held it up to my 413 one and it doesn't look any smaller, starting to think it's not a skinny....that would be frustrating!

Re: starter motor issues
How do I tell the difference between a normal and a skinny? And why do you need a skinny starter? Does the other size just not fit?

Re: starter motor issues
It's probably just dirty contacts in the solenoid, the high current ones. You can usually get them apart, but if can be a faf with un-soldering bits, but it's possible. Get it apart, clean up the bit lumps of copper and put it back together again. Mmm I can't tell, it doesn't look like the fat one and doesn't look as slim as the skinny one. Will the fat one just not fit, is that the only difference?
