How to ID a rear axle

Post by binge » Sun Aug 03, 2014 9:10 am

Earlier this year a 410 tin-top was weighed in at our yard.
Stripped the main bits off it before it went through the shear. Also pulled an axle out of the boot.

The axle has been sat in my garage for about 5 months, yesterday I finally got round to stripping the disc conversion off of it, to fit onto my 410.

Once I realised the half shafts needed to come out, bearings pressed off etc, just to get the drum back plate off, I thought about just replacing the axle.

Took a few measurements, and it started looking doable.
But as I looked closer, it looks like it's been modified.

The spring seats have been welded on (Possibly just repairs, not sure).
They sit 3ft apart, same as my 410 spring seats.

I noticed that the square flange that the drum backplate bolts to, is rotated around by about 45 degrees, compared to my 410 ones.

And then I also noticed, that the total length of the axle is about 6 inches longer (Wider) than my 410 rear axle too.

Diff ratio is different, it's higher on the newer axle, not a lot, but defo higher.

It's had bits of threaded bar, and brackets welded to it, to hold all the brake pipe work, which I cut off to take the compensator and other bits and pieces.

If it's a Sami axle, my friend Rich wants it.

Sounds like its a samurai axle that has had the perches moved in and welded to fit an SJ.
I have a feeling the square ends/flanges are welded on a about 40degree angle on the samurai :er: :er: .
More investigating now required

I need some pics, so I can do a diagram :P

I'd of fit it to my 410 but the dif-ratio will be way out. :(
And I don't want to change the front.

I can get you some more pics later on if you like. :P

Okay, cheers guys.
It's still useless to me without changing my front axle though, right? As the diff ratios are different.
