HELP!!!!!! Oil filter gasket blown!!!

Post by robbie1985 » Fri Feb 13, 2015 8:59 am

So last night on the way home from work the oil filter gasket blow out and dumped its oil all over the road! I got more oil into the motor and the seal back into the filter as a temp fix as I didn't have the time to wait for a replacement. That worked fine until this morning when it did it again outside the house.

Now I'm going to get a new filter today and drain the last of the oil out, but need to know if there are any underlying issues that could be causing the pressure to spike and pop the filter?

Both times it's happened it has been on star up whilst cold so as we all know they idle high at first, could this be the cause and the filter is just knackered and not on tight enough??

Cheers for the help

Do Vits have a positive crankcase ventilation valve? It could be stuck closed as I know this can cause the effects you're describing on other vehicles.

It does sound like a crankcase pressure build up.

If it just happens at start up try doing it with the filler cap slackened off. If it's okay then. it could be the PCV at fault.

As above. Pressure will rise more at startup as oil is thicker and also air is expanding due to temperature increase.

I think I heard of gasses blowing past the rings at lower temps too, increasing the pressure in the crankcase. When the engine got up to temp, the rings expanded and the effect stopped.

Although I think that oil gets past them at the same time, resulting in smoke. So perhaps I'm taking out of my small American WW2 4x4.

I'm gonna try this tomorrow, in the mean time how would I go about checking the pressure control value and where snouts on/in the engine is it?

Its on the inlet manifold. Breather pipe from rocker cover to air box, tis on a sj, has a t piece that connects to the manifold. The piece that looks like a long nut is the one you want
Sid James gone but never forgotten

Update time, I have removed the pcv and pull the ht leads in order to turn the motor without it firing just to check for leaks. It didn't leak so plugged the ht leads back in and started her up but alas the gasket went again. The pcv also rattles when I shake it so I think that is free to work as it should.at least from what I know of them. I used to dirty disels on ships with a crankcase breather to atmosphere. Would the oil pump be able to cause this? Also does the the pcv open or close to relieve pressure? Cheers for help and sorry for the questions, everydays a school day.
