Steering wheel removal

Post by EricG » Mon Sep 05, 2016 11:59 am

Hi. I need to remove my steering wheel and the manual says to use a special tool, which I don't have. Is there any way to remove the wheel without this tool?

Undo the centre nut but leave it on by a few threads, give the steering wheel a good wiggle with both hands while pulling it, it should come off.

Whatever you do make sure you leave the nut on a few threads, you'll thank me later when you don't end up smashing the wheel into your face because you didn't leave it on

And remember, if you have an airbag, remove the battery at least 20mins before removing.!

As Scottie says, plus, I found WD40 soaked in for an hour beforehand can help, as applying heat (gun or dryer) can be dodgy as there's plastic in the area of the nut.

Also, sitting in the drivers seat, I placed a temporary footrest, ie block of wood, under my feet, so that the knees act as another pushing force behind the wheel.
This, along with rocking the rim with my hands, helped me with a stubborn spline join.

Loosen nut bang wheel with palm of hands at the bottom often works
Sid James gone but never forgotten

Thanks to you all for your help. Tried your way Scottie - came off easy. Was planning to fit new indicator/wiper switch but found out that the old one isn't at fault so no idea why indicators and hazards not working.

MOT runs out Wednesday. There is too much wrong with the old wreck (especially there is a lot of rot) so regretfully decided that it must come off the road.

If I had the skills maybe I could do it up myself.
