87 Santana SJ410 New cam needed!

Post by Fatboy 18 » Mon Feb 25, 2013 12:07 pm

Well after buying my anus and removing the rocker box cover I was horrified on the state of the rockers and valve springs :yuk: I don't think the car had ever had an Oil change! Yet when I drove it home there did not seem to be any smoking issues?

You could not see the bloody springs and the whole rocker assembly was jet black. I set to work using Jizer, white spirit, Brake cleaner and anything else I could get my hands on to try and remove the crud! Ive used flat headed screwdrivers to loosen the crud, wire brushes and it is beginning to look a bit better.
I had not planed to do major engine work so this has been a setback. Having cleaned much of the crap off (with the head still bolted on) I can now see the cam. It looks like the last lobe of the cam is badly worn (near the back of the engine) so I need to find a replacement cam

Can anyone recommend a place to pick up one at a reasonable cost?

Have to say the costings on this thing now are beginning to spiral, not what I planed at all :(

I bought a new cam from an engine overhaul specialist in Barnstaple in N.Devon - it cost me a £100 posted but I only bought from them because it was immediately available - have you Googled your requirements to see what is available. One thought has occurred to me, are you sure in all that muck and gunge that you are not mistaking the "worn cam lobe" for the one that operates the fuel pump - it is very slight compared to the valve operating lobes?

Don't forget to do an oil and filter change after all this - the oil must be pretty contaminated with metal particles.

Thanks for the feedback, I will check the cam again but The lobe of the cam did not seem to bad, but there are deep score marks on the lobe sort of like a set of stairs! It must have damaged the follower on the base of rocker arm?

As for an Oil change, Ha Ha, Before I took the rocker box off the car I put in a can of engine flush and ran it as per instructions, well it never made a dent!
When I removed the rocker cover the black oil was well and truly baked on!
I also removed the oil filter and dropped the oil pan.

I have had the oil pan chemically dipped to remove old deposits and had the outside of the pan stove enamelled gloss black.

So any chemicals i'm using to clean the engine at the moment pretty much fall straight through the engine into a catch tray on the floor :)

Yeah - my cam was heavily scored with parallel lines in the direction of rotation and of course they are only hardened to a certain depth. Once this depth has been breached the underlying metal will wear very rapidly - is this the moment to take stock and consider a replacement engine if other parts are showing signs of advanced deterioration?

Only 1 lobe is worn and its at the rear of the engine, sounds the same as yours, Heavily scored with parallel lines :(
