putting the lights on make the engine rev ?????
putting the lights on make the engine rev ?????
so ........... ive been having problems with my samurai either stalling or revving to about 3000rpm at idle , so I thought I had a problem with the carb , so not having had a Suzuki before I thought I would read up and see if I was missing something , I then stumbled across a thread where a guy had mentioned having to pump the pedal twice to get the auto choke to work , so ...... im thinking this is the problem , so grabbed the keys went outside and pumped the pedal twice and started her up , idle no problem , until I decided to take it up the road for a run and put the headlights on , the engine then revved at idle to 3500rpm , I turn the lights off and it drops back down to 1500 again , any ideas anyone ???

Yes there is an idle up system that raises the idle speed when there is a lot of current draw on the alternator.
3500 sounds a bit high though so it will need adjusting.
Or you could just unplug the idle up system. It's the electrical connector that is sort of under and off to the left of the thermostat housing iirc.

That's about the dim dip relay not the idle up systemROBBIE wrote:Have a read here http://forum.suzukiclubuk.co.uk/vi ... &hilit=dip

scottie ; so are you suggesting that I unplug the idle up unit and leave it unplugged ?? do you think this would give me the problems I am getting ie ; under normal conditions ie no headlights , On idle its either stalling or racing to 3.5 ??
cheers

Re: putting the lights on make the engine rev ?????
Unplugging the idle up system will just stop the revs rising when the lights are on etc, I completely removed the idle up system on my old 1.6 carb.
It shouldn't effect the stalling issue, the stalling is probably a choke related issue and that's a seperate system.
In the General troubleshooting section on here you can download a service manual and there's a whole section about the carb and setting it up. They are quite complicated carbs though, most people get rid of them and swap them for a weber or SU.

Scottie , ive just been out and started it again , AND when I put the heater on it does the same so you may well have hit the nail on the head , ive just got to find the little blighter now and un plug it , I can live with the stalling but the high revs at idle make me sound like my great aunt mary in her metro
Re: putting the lights on make the engine rev ?????
my samurai has the same stalling issue when it's first started, I've not quite completely solved it yet but with some tweaking of the carb I'm almost there and it's nowhere near as bad as it was when I first got it.
I presume once it's warmed up a bit it doesn't stall.
