Hi! I have just got an R reg Grand Vitara 2L V6 with an auto box. When I first turn on the ignition I get a light that says OD/off (or words to that effect). It only comes on for a second. I believe that there is an Overdrive button on the back of the gear stick but this makes no difference if it is pushed in or not.
After pulling away it changes gear 3 times so appears to have 4 gears. Does that include overdrive or should that be a 5th gear?
It does rev quite a bit faster than my better half's Honda Jazz 1.4 auto and is doing similar rpm at 55mph as the Jazz does at 70mph.
I'm driving it to France in a few weeks and would be happier knowing if my gears are ok.
Have I got a dodgy overdrive? . . . Any advice would be most weclome. (Deliberate spelling mistake).
Mike.

Re: Grand Vitara auto Overdrive?
This says it's a 3 speed with overdrive, so I think you're ok.
Except that the flashing OD light might mean your gearbox is unhappy. I think you should get the diagnostic codes out of it - although I'm not sure exactly how that's done with a gearbox ECU! It'll have an OBD-II port on it somewhere, I imagine - but I don't know if the gearbox has a separate ECU or if you pull the codes from the engine ECU.
Rhinoman might know...

Re: Grand Vitara auto Overdrive?
Right I think this model is the SV620, so I had a look in the workshop manual and from what I can find 4th gear is referred to as overdrive. Can I assume with overdrive switched off it will only go to 3rd ??
The warning light sounds normal, with no error codes

Yes it a 3-sp with overdrive/4-speed depending on which particular piece of Suzuki documentation you happen to be reading. There is no OBD2 on an R reg, the TCM does have its own diagnostic port but you can pull codes using a jumper similar to how you pull codes from the engine ECU. The FSM for the SV620 can be downloaded here:

The TCM should be similar to this one:
