Not 100% on the 410 dizzy, but on my sammy the wires come out of the dizzy body, yes
You're right about the diode, but you should be able to run it without the noise supressor as I believe that's just for the radio's benefit

so what sort of specs does the diode need to be to not blow up?

It should just about start without the feed from the starter if its not cold. Have you got a condenser fitted? its a long time since I looked at a 410 dizzy but I have a feeling that the condenser is in the noise suppressor so you would need that fitted.
Edit: the wiring diagrams in the electrical section indicate that the condenser is separate so it might be worth checking/changing that.

Yep, don't worry about the noise suppressor.
Just for testing by-pass the ballast resistor, the longer it's connected like this the hotter it will get though.
The diode is nothing special, but does need to be able to carry the current the coil needs.
I have no idea how much this is though

Well as far as I can find out the coil is 1.5 ohm
The ballast resistor is 1.5 ohm
So I think on cranking the coil can draw 8amps (seems very high )
I see you can get 10amp diodes on fleebay easy enough.
Mind you, have I got a clue what I'm on about

so it seems I don't need to worry about the capacitor, and I got a 6 amp diode today, this was the biggest the guy stocked, so I hope it doesn't blow on me

I would expect that to be OK, as it should only be carrying current for a short time.

From that it looks like the coil is a 6V coil, which is unusual, Euro coils tend to be 9V. While cranking the battery voltage will drop down to around 9V, you'll lose about 1V across the diode so the coil current will be 8/(1.5) = 5.3A max.
