Re: Anton's build
Presume the tickover not being able to drop below 1200 isn't linked to cable tension?
Should be pretty easy to tune.

Re: Anton's build
No, I have my cable tension set a little lose. I think it's somewhere between the throttle disc spring valve (gotta look into that one, Chris) the timing, and how I've set (mis-set?) the needle.
Gonna start by doing the timing, then try resetting the needle, then looking into the throttle disc spring issues.
Might do all of that in the car park if they'll let me, and then see if they'll run it up on the emissions machine for me again while I mess with the mixture screw.

Re: Anton's build
See the black rubber hose there, connected to the little green thing sticking out of the top of the carb - that's my vac advance. It was a hole that went into the carb in front of the throttle disc, and was just going to atmosphere.
I used it for my vac advance instead of drilling a new hole, because I assumed that it wasn't supposed to be unblocked.
Now I'm wondering if I've done something stupid, and I need to unblock that hole and drill a new one for the dizzy vac advance line.

Re: Anton's build
Advance should be carb side of the butterfly.
Tune it using the John twist video on YouTube.

Re: Anton's build
Dan - the advance is taken from between the venturi and the butterfly.
I used this video (and a description of the process given to me by Scottie) to try to tune the carb.
I was still up at 6.3 (gotta get below 4.5). Everything else is sorted. Hydrocarbons were low (700 out of 1200) but CO was way high.
Not sure what causes high CO - running rich should bump the HC levels, not the CO levels, shouldn't it? I have no idea how to get these emissions down, I'm just going to have to get a gas analyser and then play with it until I reach a setting that actually works.
I'm a bit worried now that I'm burning oil, actually.

Re: Anton's build
Might be worth disconnecting the vac advance for the emissions tuning?
Should run just as well with static timing? and you only need to do the idle emissions test I think...

Re: Anton's build
Running rich will bump the CO levels up, has the carb been rebuilt? Could be the choke I rings are allowing fuel through.

Re: Anton's build
My HC levels are low (700 out of 1200, if memory serves) so I'm worried that I'm burning oil or something.
I've got a gunson gastester coming now. Plan is to hook it up, do the timing, set up the carb, and all being well, pass emissions.
Other tricks I might try are:
Anyhow, he's passing the gastester onto his mate who works just across the river. Hoping I can pop over and pick it up on Tuesday.
Should have a much better idea of what's going on then.

Other tricks I might try are:
- Redex the crap out of it
- A tiny teeny weeny bit of water sprayed into the carb while it's running (to decoke)
- "Italian tuneup"
- Run oil cleaner through and new oil
- Rebuild the carb with new seals

Re: Anton's build
It's taxed, MOT'd and insured.
But the battery is dead, so I have to charge it up before I can go anywhere in it...
Still, tomorrow might be fun!
